Brilliant observation, Marji! You're right ... the monotony of the space does evoke an ominous feeling. I would add that the similarity of each waiting room's design makes it easy to get lost in thought about the last time you were in a waiting room, adding to the angst. As you're redesigning, maybe rearrange the seating so it's not all pushed up against the walls like soldiers at attention ;)
